Girls Cricket at Moorebank Cricket Club

At Moorebank, girls of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to join and thrive. Our programs are designed for fun, learning, and skills development. Here’s what you can expect:
- Blasters (Ages 5–9): The perfect entry point for young girls! Games are played with softer balls, and every player bats and bowls in every match, building confidence and basic cricket skills in a friendly, non-competitive environment.
- Junior Teams (U11–U17): Girls can play in all-girls teams or mixed teams, depending on age group and preference. Saturday matches and weekday training sessions are tailored to be inclusive, fun, and supportive of all players’ development. If needed, girls can play 2 years below their correct age group – talk to our Junior Co-Ordinator for more information.
- Pathways to Representative Cricket: Talented and passionate players can be selected for association, regional, and even state representative teams—the sky’s the limit!
The Story of Girls in Cricket
Cricket has a long and proud history among girls and women, dating back well over a century. The first recorded women’s cricket match took place in England in 1745, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that girls’ and women’s cricket started to gain recognition in Australia.
In 1931, the Australian Women’s Cricket Council was formed, and the first Australian women’s Test match was played in 1934 against England. From these early trailblazers to today’s world-renowned athletes, girls and women have shown that they belong on the cricket field—breaking barriers, setting records, and inspiring new generations.
Today, Australian women’s cricket is among the best in the world, with our national team consistently ranked at the top. The rise of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) has brought female cricketing heroes into the spotlight, giving young girls role models to admire and aspire to.
Famous Female Australian Cricketers

- Meg Lanning: Known as the “Megastar,” Lanning captained Australia to multiple World Cup victories and is a prolific run-scorer with an impressive list of records to her name.
- Lisa Sthalekar: Born in India and raised in Australia, Sthalekar is a legendary all-rounder, commentator, and fierce advocate for women’s cricket.
